It’s been over a year since HBO concluded its critically-acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries. And now, the show’s writer and director are re-teaming for their next project. Back in March, we learned that Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin was working on bringing The Last of Us to HBO. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Johan Renck will also lend his talents to the upcoming video game adaptation as the director of the pilot episode.
Renck helmed all five episodes of Chernobyl, and his use of muted colors should translate nicely to The Last of Us’ post-apocalyptic landscape. Renck’s work on Chernobyl also earned him several awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or a Dramatic Special. His previous TV credits include episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Bloodline. Additionally, Renck has directed music videos for the likes of David Bowie, Madonna, Chris Cornell, and Beyoncé.

Mazin is writing and executive producing The Last of Us alongside Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director of the original video game. Renck and Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce the show with Naughty Dog President Evan Wells. In the meantime, hype continues to build for the game’s long-awaited follow-up, The Last of Us Part II. The sequel will hit stores on June 19.
HBO has yet to set a release date for The Last of Us.
