Robert Kirkman Says That Invincible Footage is Coming Soon

With the expansion of The Walking Dead franchise, it’s been easy to forget that adaptations of other Robert Kirkman properties are in the works. A new animated TV show based on Invincible, has been in development at Amazon for about two years. It’s based on the offbeat superhero comic Kirkman created with artist Cory Walker in 2002. Now, Kirkman has confirmed that a first look at the series is not far off.

Kirkman provided an update on Invincible while chatting with Cartoonist Kayfabe (via Heroic Hollywood). Fans of his original comic will be happy to know that Amazon will reveal an air date and premiere the first round of footage from the show in the near future. And judging by his comments, the series will retain the comic’s graphic imagery.

“We should be announcing the release date and showing some footage from that show very soon,” said Kirkman. “I’m very excited about that extremely violent cartoon.”

Amazon announced the voice cast for Invincible last summer. The lineup includes Steven Yuen as Mark Grayson/Invincible and J.K. Simmons as his father, Omni-Man. However, there hasn’t been a lot of new information about the project since then. According to Kirkman, this is because of the delay between the recording stage and the animation stage.

“So when we hired the voice actors for Invincible, it started leaking,” continued Kirkman. “J.K. Simmons and Sandra Oh and Steven Yeun are gonna be doing this cartoon series. So we had to announce the cast, otherwise it would have been leaked. And who knows how they’re gonna report that kind of stuff? So we had to announce when we started doing voice recording, but you start doing voice recording before you start doing animation. So that’s why there’s a big gap between, ‘We’re doing the Invincible show, and here’s this amazing cast, and don’t worry, it’ll be out at some point in the future.’”
