Giancarlo Esposito Teases Darksaber Status in The Mandalorian Season 2

The sophomore season of The Mandalorian will answer many questions, especially the ones about Moff Gideon’s darksaber. The ancient weapon made its first appearance right before the end of the season when Gideon made his way out of the wreckage of his TIE fighter. In a recent interview with DeadlineThe Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito teased that the weapon invented by Tarre Vizsla — the first Mandalorian-born Jedi — will be a “key” in the sophomore season.

“You’ll see more of the darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world,” Esposito said. “Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later. (The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”

The actor went on to add that he took inspiration from Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope.

“You could always read his mind through his eyes,” Esposito added. “I took a look at the imagery of this supreme chancellor, which really helped me. He is a supreme being in a sense. He knows it, but not everyone in the universe knows it. What we don’t know is how extra special he is yet.”

Recently, Esposito landed an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor thanks to his work in The Mandalorian. Esposito also got an Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of Gus Fring in Better Call Saul.
