X-Men Star Shawn Ashmore Cast in The Boys Season 2 as Lamplighter

Twenty years ago, Shawn Ashmore got his big break in Hollywood when he began appearing as Bobby Drake/Iceman in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films. Now, he’s getting ready to play a completely different kind of superhero. Although The Boys’ second season premiere is less than a month away, the series’ producers have just announced that Ashmore is starring as a pivotal character from the comics in the new episodes. Via CinemaBlend, Ashmore will appear as Lamplighter, one of The Seven’s former heroes.

Lamplighter was actually mentioned in The Boys’ first season as Starlight’s predecessor on the world’s premiere superhero team. He also played a major role in The Boys’ disbandment prior to the start of the series. Following a standoff between The Seven and The Boys, Lamplighter retaliated by killing team leader Grace Mallory’s grandchildren. This tragedy also prompted Mallory to walk away from supe surveillance for good.

As anyone who’s read the comics can attest, Lamplighter was left in no condition for a fight after this encounter. However, the TV show seems to be taking liberties with his fate, as the first image of Ashmore’s character suggests. You can check out the photo for yourself below.

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke also issued his own statement about what Ashmore will bring to the series.

“We were thrilled that Shawn — who is, let’s be honest, an OG superhero — wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter,” Kripke said. “He brings so much depth, menace, and world weary humanity to this former member of the Seven. And Shawn is a really good guy. We’re grateful to have him join our bloody little family.”

The Boys season 2 will hit Amazon Prime on September 4.
