Nickelodeon’s Star Trek: Prodigy Animated Series Gets a Showrunner

During last month’s Comic-Con@Home extravaganza, Nickelodeon confirmed that it was bringing a new Star Trek animated series to its airwaves. Now, the network has finally secured a showrunner to guide its development process. Deadline brings word that Ben Hibon will spearhead Star Trek: Prodigy, serving as a director and a co-executive producer.

Hibon’s most recognizable claim to fame might stem from his work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. While working on that film, he directed the animated scene where Hermione Granger recounts the legend of the titular artifacts. Hibon has also directed his own short films including the award-winning Codehunters. That film originally aired during the MTV Asia Music Awards in 2006 and can be viewed here.

The CG-animated Star Trek: Prodigy centers on “lawless” teens who go joyriding across the galaxy in an abandoned Starfleet vessel. The series was announced just as another animated Star Trek series, Lower Decks, was about to premiere on CBS All Access. However, while the Star Trek brand is thriving on the small screen, the franchise’s big-screen future remains unknown. Last week brought word that Paramount was rethinking its plans for the next theatrical Star Trek adventure.

“Ben’s contributions to the world of animation are immeasurable, and we are so lucky to have his vision and creative genius on Star Trek: Prodigy,” added Ramsey Naito, EVP Animation Production and Development, Nickelodeon Group. “As an incredible storyteller and a world builder with a distinct vision, his original approach paired with this beloved property will bring the characters to life in a whole new way.”

Star Trek: Prodigy will debut on Nickelodeon in 2021.
