Last year, Netflix revealed plans to adapt Mark Millar and artist Olivier Coipel’s comic book series, The Magic Order, into a TV show. James Wan, the director of Aquaman, even joined the series an executive producer. However, Deadline is now reporting that Netflix is pulling the plug on The Magic Order shortly before the first season was set to begin production.
Netflix purchased the vast majority of Millar’s comic book titles in 2017, and The Magic Order would have been the first TV series under that deal. Pre-production was already underway in Prague , even though the scripts weren’t finished yet. According to Deadline, Netflix pulled back because of “the large scope of the project and the global uncertainty amid the pandemic.” But the report also notes that it wasn’t the primary reason.

Additionally, Deadline mentions that one crew member from The Magic Order‘s pre-production team tested positive for COVID-19. The report also mentions that the Czech Republic had a record number of new COVID-19 infections this week.
There may still be some hope for this project down the line. Netflix may still pursue an adaptation, but not in the immediate future. The comic book series was first published in 2018. And there will still be new volumes of The Magic Order comic book in the future. However, there’s currently no dates for those issues.
