Elizabeth Olsen Teases Scarlet Witch’s Mental State in WandaVision

WandaVision has the distinction of being the only new Marvel Studios project that will arrive this year. The upcoming Disney+ original series will feature Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Wanda Maximoff and Vision together again for the first time since Vision’s demise in Avengers: Infinity War. While the mystery of Vision’s return will unfold in the show, it seems likely that Wanda may have unintentionally resurrected him with her reality warping powers. Within Marvel’s comic book universe, Wanda/Scarlet Witch has pulled off similar feats of power.

Via Comic Book Movie, Olsen spoke with The New York Times about the upcoming series and she teased a more comics-accurate take on Scarlet Witch. And that may include Wanda’s infamous mental breakdowns.

WandaVision is such an incredible concept,” said Olsen. “It’s the first time we get to understand her as the Scarlet Witch that she is in the comics, and that’s exciting for me, because I haven’t yet been able to give her that time onscreen. So that’s going to be fun. She’s always been a representation of mental health and illness in the comics, and her major role is handling that stigma within Marvel.”

Olsen is referring to two major comic book storylines that featuring Scarlet Witch. In Avengers West Coast during the ’90s, Wanda slowly went insane after Vision’s memories and emotions were wiped. Their children were also revealed to be magical constructs. Because of that, Wanda even briefly rejoined Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants before she regained her sanity. After suffering another mental break in Avengers: Disassembled, Wanda rewrote reality in House of M to create a mutant-dominated world.

During her interview with The New York Times, Olsen also indicated that she doesn’t currently have any details about her role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She simply said “it’s still kind of early.”

WandaVision will hit Disney+ before the end of the year.
