Earlier this year, HBO Max signed Gremlins director Joe Dante to serve as a consultant on Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Since then, there’s been very little word about the upcoming prequel animated series. However, Secrets of the Mogwai showrunner, Tze Chun, has shared an early look at concept art from the series. Chun posted it on his Twitter account, and it appears to show Gizmo and Wing nearly 100 years ago.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will take place in Shanghai during the 1920s. Presumably it will fill in some of the backstory of Gizmo, and the three rules of the Gremlins. In the original film, Mr. Wing was Gizmo’s original owner before Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) brought Gizmo home for Christmas in 1984. Gizmo bonded with Randall’s son, Billy (Zach Galligan). before Billy broke the rules and accidentally unleashed the Gremlins.
Billy and Gizmo reunited in Gremlins 2: The New Batch. However, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will be the first expansion of the franchise in decades.
HBO Max hasn’t set a date for the series yet. Regardless, it will probably premiere in 2021 or 2022.
