WandaVision Filmed Partially in Front of a Live Studio Audience

Due to the COVID-19 global emergency, Marvel Studios’ sole release for the year will likely be the WandaVision series. But the upcoming Disney+ original series has all the ingredients to be a must-watch for comics fans and sitcom lovers. And it seems that the famous The Dick Van Dyke Show influenced Disney, given that actor Dick Van Dyke had lunch with WandaVision director Matt Shakman and Marvel Studios’ kingpin Kevin Feige at Disneyland during last year’s Disney’s D23 Expo.

The Dick Van Dyke Show can be very broad with silly physical-comedy gags, and yet it never feels false, and I wondered how they did that,” Shakman said while talking with EW. “His answer was really simple: He basically said that if it couldn’t happen in real life, it couldn’t happen on the show.”

WandaVision will pay homage to many other TV comedies that fans have watched over the years. Marvel even invited an audience to attend the premiere episode filming, like a real sitcom. It will likely be the first Marvel television series released on Disney+ given that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been recently rescheduled. More than that, it will kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Feige, it will please both newcomers and hardcore fans.

“If you haven’t seen any of them and just want to step into this weird thing because you love The Dick Van Dyke Show, it’s going to work,” Feige said in the same interview. “But if you’ve been tracking the 23 movies we’ve made and following along the stories into Phase 4, there’ll be a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds.”

WandaVision will follow the adventures of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany’s Vision. Scarlet Witch and her love have moved to the idyllic town of Westview following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Disney has yet to reveal an official debut date for WandaVision, but they previously implied it would air by year’s end. In the meantime, EW also released a set of promotional photos with the protagonists. You can check them out in their cover story.
