Terence Winter Departs from HBO Max’s The Batman Spinoff TV Series
Gotham will turn on the Bat-signal in search of a new showrunner for the upcoming TV series spin-off of Matt Reeves’ Batman. According to THR, Terence Winter has stepped out from his role as showrunner of the Gotham City Police Department-focused series. Apparently, the reason behind the departure of the former writer and executive producer of Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos is creative differences with Reeves — who will write the untitled TV show in addition to directing the movie — and other producers. HBO Max is currently looking for a new showrunner for the series that will likely take inspiration from 2002’s Gotham Central comic.

HBO Max revealed its plans to develop the spin-off police drama series back in July. According to the producers’ intentions, the series will be told from the point of view of a corrupt GCPD officer. The story will take place during Batman‘s first year as Gotham’s masked vigilante. In the past, director Reeves indicated that his movie would take place during Bruce Wayne’s second year as the Dark Knight, which establishes the series as a prequel in the same universe. At the moment, it’s still unclear if Robert Pattinson would reprise his role from the film.
Following Winter’s exit, Reeves will executive produce the series together with Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, and Dylan Clark. HBO Max has yet to set a release date for the show.
