Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 2 episode 5!
In the series finale of Star Wars Rebels, Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, joined Sabine Wren for a quest to find the missing Ezra Bridger. Last week on The Mandalorian, Ahsoka made her first appearance since the Rebels finale. While it stands to reason that Ahsoka’s latest story took place after Star Wars Rebels, executive producer Dave Filoni is suggesting that her place in the timeline may be more complex.
Filoni addressed the issue during an interview with Vanity Fair, and he indicated that the Rebels finale may have come after Ahsoka’s appearance in The Mandalorian.
“I think the thing that people will most not understand is they want to go in a linear fashion,” noted Filoni. “But as I learned as a kid, nothing in Star Wars really works in a linear fashion. You do [Episodes] Four, Five and Six and then One, Two, and Three. So in the vein of that history, when you look at the epilogue of Rebels you don’t really know how much time has passed. So, it’s possible that the story I’m telling in The Mandalorian actually takes place prior to that. Possible. I’m saying it’s possible.”

Regardless of when the episode takes place, Ahsoka has already provided the direct link between both shows. After subduing the Magistrate, Ahsoka demanded that she divulge the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ezra and Thrawn were both lost in the Rebels finale, when Thrawn’s Star Destroyer was forced to go to lightspeed to an unknown destination. If Ahsoka is looking for Thrawn, it’s likely she’s already looking for Ezra as well.
