Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy Join HBO’s House of the Dragon

Seven years after leaving the TARDIS behind, Matt Smith is joining another fantasy franchise, and he’s bringing a few other recognizable faces with him. According to Deadline, Smith has been cast in House of the Dragon alongside Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy. The series is a prequel to Game of Thrones.

Smith, Cooke, and D’Arcy will play three of five lead characters on the new show. Smith is starring as Prince Daemon Targaryen, a “peerless warrior and a dragonrider” who is also the younger brother of Paddy Considine’s King Viserys I. Cooke is Alicent Hightower, whose father, Otto Hightower, serves as Hand of the King. Alicent is described as “the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms” who also possesses a “keen political acumen.”

Finally, D’Arcy is playing the King’s first-born child, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, whose blood is “pure” Valyrian. The producers have not yet cast the last key role, Lord Corlys Velaryon, who becomes hand to Queen Rhaenyra during the Dance of Dragons. However, Halo’s Danny Sapani is reportedly in talks for this part. Deadline’s sources also shared that Clare Kilner, Geeta Patel and Greg Yaitanes have joined House of the Dragon as directors.

After his three year stint on Doctor Who, Smith landed roles in films like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Terminator: Genisys. He later received an Emmy nod for his performance on Netflix’s The Crown and he will next appear in Sony’s Morbius. Fans might recognize Cooke from Ready Player One as well as her most recent role in Sound of Metal. Meanwhile, D’Arcy currently stars on Amazon’s Truth Seekers.

House of the Dragon will begin production in 2021 and premiere on HBO in 2022.
