Javicia Leslie Didn’t Talk to Ruby Rose Before Batwoman Season 2

In a matter of days, The CW will officially release the second season of Batwoman. With Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane gone from the show, Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder will don the cape and cowl as Gotham City’s new masked vigilante. While talking with Variety, Leslie revealed that she didn’t ask for counsel from the former Batwoman.

“No, I didn’t talk with her,” she stated.

She then explained the difference between her take on the hero and Ruby Rose’s one.

“The writers and the showrunner already did a great job at that, so I didn’t have to intentionally try to be different,” she said. “The writing allowed this character to stand out on its own and, of course, we’re two different individuals so my natural energy coming into it is already going to be different. I think my only job is to show up and have fun, and play in the storyline that’s already been created.”

Leslie went on to add a quick description of her character. In the story, Ryan Wilder will come from quite a different background than Kate Kane’s one.

“[She’s] not used to things being given to [her, she’s] used to having to fight for things, to figure things out for her own,” she added. “And with that street-savviness comes a little bit of street-smart-assness. That’s something I can consider Ryan has in her. She’s also not a person that’s easily convinced; she’s not a person that’s easily fooled. She has her guards up when she first starts out meeting everyone and trying to figure out who’s who and who’s really on her side, and even through that all, she feels like she’s in this herself. “

Batwoman Season 2 will debut on The CW on Jan. 17.
