Anthony Mackie Addresses Captain America’s MCU Future

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers passed on Captain America’s shield to Falcon/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).  However, the upcoming Disney+ series is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, not Captain America and the Winter Soldier. While Falcon is seen with Cap’s shield in the trailers, he’s not Captain America yet.

Via Comic Book, Mackie appeared on The Jess Cagle Show, and he indicated that the question of Cap’s successor isn’t settled.

“No, we don’t know that yet,” said Mackie. “The show, the idea of the show is basically, you know, and at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America. So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.”

There’s also a rival contender in the show itself. Wyatt Russell is making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the series as John Walker, aka U.S. Agent. He was Cap’s replacement for a brief period in the comics during the ’80s. And in the trailer, Walker’s costume is very similar to Cap’s.

Sebastian Stan is co-headlining The Falcon and the Winter Solider with Mackie. Daniel Bruhl and Emily VanCamp will also return as Helmet Zemo and Sharon Carter, respectively.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will hit Disney+ in March.
