HBO Chief Talks DC Universe and Game of Thrones Expansion Plans

It’s no secret anymore that HBO has big plans for Game of Thrones. The television network has recently announced its intention to develop an animated series, in addition to the already announced spin-off series that should debut on HBO Max sooner rather than later. In a recent and detailed interview with THR, HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys revealed that their approach to expanding the franchise is not quantitative but rather a qualitative one, rewarding the stories worth telling rather than reaching a certain quota of shows for the fans. That’s why he believes they won’t saturate the franchise the same way Disney is doing with Marvel and Star Wars TV shows.

“I look at for HBO Max and WarnerMedia looks at it overall, that we have these great brands: HBO, DC, whatever we’re going to do with Game of Thrones,” he said. “I don’t think as a company you necessarily want to think about it terms of just what’s on HBO Max or just what’s in theaters. It’s overall, what do we have? In terms of over-saturation to me and HBO Max, for any slate, whether it’s at HBO or HBO Max, you try to have some diversity and variance in the slate so it’s not all DC, so it’s not all adult animation, it’s not all acquired programming. You find the right level for subscribers that they really respond to and are always finding something new and different to watch.”

Bloys went on to say that he wants a ‘good mix’ of DC shows and Game of Thrones spinoffs on HBO Max.

After refusing to give any more details about the Harry Potter series situation, Bloys took on the future of the DC Universe. He stated that the Peacemaker show was one of the first decisions he took after getting involved with the DC content in August.

“It’s a great example of what HBO Max can do with DC content in that we’re producing at al level we haven’t seen DC content on TV do thus far. It’s been one of [WarnerMedia CEO] Ann Sarnoff’s priorities to organize the DC world for exactly what you’re talking about — to make sure that the universe is logical and makes sense. She talks about the flywheel: that the movies speak to the TV shows that speak to the movies — that it’s all connected. There’s a lot of work going on in that at DC and Warner Bros. That is very much something that Ann has made a priority and the company is doing.

Per Bloys, having regular conversations with Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich and DC content chief Jim Lee is one of the significant differences in how WarnerMedia deals with its IP today. He then explained that The CW’s new DC shows after Greg Berlanti’s departure from the television network are just a lot of ‘opportunity’ for DC fans…despite others seeing just ‘confusion.’
