Next month, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will take two of the MCU’s most vital supporting characters and finally give them their turn in the spotlight. Over the course of six episodes, they will deal with the return of Zemo (Daniel Brühl), the introduction of U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and possibly some surprises as well. However, their greatest battle might just be with each other.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, it doesn’t seem accurate to call them “friends” just yet. The show’s latest trailer even showed them going to couple’s therapy. But according to head writer Malcolm Spellman, this is exactly what gives the show its edge. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Spellman discussed the “fire-and-ice dynamic” between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s characters.
“There’s a real chemistry there,” said Spellman. “Imagine getting to write the first installment of a buddy cop series, knowing exactly what the rhythm and flavor is with the two characters before you even start.”

“There’s an odd couple kind of back-and-forth there,” added Stan. “Like, ‘I don’t really like you, but I might need you.'”
Spellman also revealed that Mackie and Stan would improvise their own insults during filming. But apart from the fragile nature of their new partnership, their characters will face some new personal challenges as well. The series will continue to explore Bucky’s struggles as a man out of time, the same dilemma that plagued Steve Rogers as Captain America. And Sam must deal with the pressures of inheriting Steve’s role as the next Captain America.
“The idea of whether or not a Black man could become Captain America just felt like a huge moment and a huge opportunity.” continued Spellman.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on March 19 on Disney+.
