HBO Max Gives Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai an Early Season 2 Renewal

The first season of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai hasn’t even wrapped production. Regardless, HBO Max must like what they see, because they’ve just ordered more episodes starring the pint-sized creatures. According to Deadline, Secrets of the Mogwai will return for a second season on WarnerMedia’s new streaming service.

HBO Max announced the decision during WarnerMedia’s Kids and Family presentation at the TCA virtual press tour. The upcoming animated series acts as a prequel to the original Gremlins, which hit theaters in 1984 and introduced moviegoers to the Mogwai: the small, ostensibly well-meaning furballs who can actually be more destructive than they let on. Secrets of the Mogwai will take fans back to 1920s Shanghai and introduce them to 10-year-old Sam Wing (Keye Luke’s elderly character from the film). There, viewers will learn how Sam met the adorable little Mogwai named Gizmo.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is producing Secrets of the Mogwai alongside Warner Bros. Animation. Tze Chun, a veteran of Fox’s Gotham, is acting as showrunner and executive producer. Earlier this week, Ming-Na Wen, Matthew Rhys, and BD Wong joined the series’ voice cast in key supporting roles. James Hong, A.J. LoCascio, and Gabrielle Green also star, with Izaac Wang headlining the show as Sam.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will premiere its 10-episode first season on HBO Max sometime this year.
