Last month, The CW ordered a pilot for its live-action Powerpuff Girls series, and now the project finally has a director. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Maggie Kiley will helm the series’ first episode.
Plans for the network’s grown-up take on the classic Cartoon Network staple originally made the rounds last summer. The show will re-imagine Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disaffected adults who have long since left the superhero life behind them. Now in their 20s and resentful of the fact that they had to spend their childhoods saving the world, they will be forced to get the team back together when new threats emerge.
Craig McCracken launched the original Powerpuff Girls in 1998, but it doesn’t look like he’s involved with this modern update. Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is writing the show alongside Veronica Mars and Sleepy Hollow veteran Heather Regnier. Cody and Regnier are also executive producing the series with Greg Berlanti through his Berlanti Productions banner.

Kiley already has a long-standing relationship with Berlanti. In the past, she’s helmed episodes of several shows including Riverdale and Katy Keene. With Kiley filling the director’s chair, the next step is presumably to cast grown-up versions of the three central characters. It also seems likely that we’ll see older versions of fan-favorite supporting players from the cartoon. The possibilities range from the girls’ creator, Professor Utonium, to their arch-nemesis, Mojo Jojo. But at this point, we still don’t know if the project will actually get a full series order.
