Demián Bichir To Lead Showtime’s Let the Right One In TV Series

There’s a new American remake of Let the Right One In on the way. But this time, the beloved Swedish horror story is being re-imagined for the small screen. Collider brings word that Showtime has ordered a pilot for a new TV series based on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel. Additionally, the producers have tapped Demián Bichir to play a key role.

Lindqvist originally published Let the Right One In in 2004. The book centers on a 12-year-old boy named Oskar who befriends a mysterious girl named Eli, eventually discovering that she’s a centuries-old vampire. A film adaptation hit theaters in Sweden in 2008. And two years later, Matt Reeves wrote and directed his own English-language version, simply titled Let Me In and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloë Grace Moretz. Both films received critical acclaim.

Currently, Bichir can be seen in Chaos Walking and will also appear in Godzilla vs. Kong, which hits theaters and HBO Max later this month. Previously, his performance in 2011’s A Better Life netted him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Some of Bichir’s other big-screen credits include The Hateful Eight, Machete Kills, The Nun, and The Midnight Sky. On the small screen, he’s had roles on Showtime’s Weeds and FX’s The Bridge.

Bichir will star on the series as Mark, the father of the young vampire, named Eleanor in this incarnation. The new version of Let the Right One In comes from award-winning playwright Andrew Hinderaker, who serves as the project’s showrunner. Hinderaker will executive produce the show alongside Seith Mann, who’s directing the series’ pilot episode. Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements are also onboard as executive producers.

Showtime’s Amy Israel issued a new statement about Bichir’s casting:

“Let the Right One In quickly establishes itself as a thrilling, high-stakes drama that asks the question: How far would you go to save your child from the monsters out there — would you risk becoming a monster yourself?” said Israel. “Demián Bichir is one of the world’s most dynamic and engrossing actors, and his charisma and vulnerability will surely bring Andrew Hinderaker’s exquisite script to life, guided by Seith Mann’s deft direction. We couldn’t be more excited about the potential of this show.”

“The series is both a love letter to the original film and a story entirely our own,” added Hinderaker. “Casting a true artist like Demián epitomizes our bold aspiration to be one of the most terrifying shows on TV, and one of the most moving.”

Showtime hasn’t announced a premiere date for Let the Right One In.
