The CW’s Powerpuff Girls Series Casts Donald Faison as Professor Utonium

After playing a surgeon on TV for nearly 10 years, Donald Faison is trying his hand at playing a scientist. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Faison has joined The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls pilot as Professor Drake Utonium.

On the original Cartoon Network series, Professor Utonium created the titular heroes by mixing sugar, spice, and everything nice with a heaping dose of Chemical X. He subsequently acted as a father figure to the girls throughout the show’s six-year run. But this new take on the property, which re-imagines the girls as young adults in their 20s, finds Utonium estranged from his surrogate children. According to his character description, Faison’s Utonium is a “quirky, debonair and narcissistic scientific genius who is immensely proud of the three extraordinary girls he created in his lab. Staring down a midlife crisis, he is determined to repair his relationships with his now-adult daughters.”

Earlier this month, the new series’ producers cast Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault to headline the show as the adult versions Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, respectively. Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier wrote the pilot for the series, which is now officially titled Powerpuff. The network hasn’t announced a start date yet, but Bennet has already begun preparing for the shoot. Last week, she posted an Instagram video showing off her newly-dyed red hair.

Most viewers know Faison from playing Turk on all nine seasons of Scrubs. He recently appeared on ABC’s Emergence and also lent his voice to Star Wars Resistance as Hype Fazon. Some of his movie roles include Skyline, Remember the Titans, and Clueless.
