Until yesterday, it was widely expected that Powerpuff had a place on The CW’s fall schedule. However, the network took the unusual step of rejecting the original pilot while also retaining the cast and creative team. The CW wants to revisit the live-action Powerpuff Girls with a new pilot episode. That means the show still has a chance of getting picked up, if the mistakes of the current pilot are fixed.
Via Deadline, The CW CEO Mark Pedowitz was fairly frank about why the network passed on the original Powerpuff pilot.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss, this was just a miss,” said Pedowitz during a conference call. “We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo and Heather, the writers… in this case, the pilot didn’t work.”
Pedowitz also noted that the pilot “might’ve felt a little too campy.”

“You learn things and you test things out,” added Pedowitz. “In this case we felt let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board because this is a powerful property, it has engaged a lot of interest and we want to get it right before we put it out.”
Additionally, several script pages from the Powerpuff pilot reportedly leaked online yesterday. It’s unclear if those pages were from the actual pilot, but they received a largely negative reaction on social media.
As noted above, Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, and Yana Perreault will still headline the series as Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup. Donald Faison will also co-star in the series as the Powerpuff Girls’ creator and adoptive father, Professor Drake Utonium. Additionally, Nicholas Podany will portray Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., the son of Mojo Jojo. Robyn Lively rounds out the cast as Sara Bellum.
Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody co-wrote the original Powerpuff pilot, and they will also get to write the second pilot.
