The Sandman Names More Cast, Including Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death

Warner Bros. has just announced the additional cast for The Sandman. A few months after revealing that Tom Sturridge will portray Dream and that he will be joined by the likes of Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer, Charles Dance’s Roderick Burgess, among the others, now fans finally have the name of the actors who will portray some of the most important characters in the universe created by Neil Gaiman.

In the upcoming series, Kirby Howell-Baptiste will portray Death, one of the Endless and Dream’s sister. Howell-Baptiste credits include portraying Simone Garnett in The Good Place and having a recurrent role in the fourth season of Veronica Mars. The Endless family also includes Desire and Despair, Dream’s twin siblings who have turned against their sibling from time to time. Desire is portrayed by the non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park, who will also play Gren in Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop. Donna Preston will take on the role of Desire’s twin, Despair.

The rest of the cast includes Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, the great-great-great-grandmother of John. We will also see Harry Potter alum David Thewlis as John Dee and Patton Oswalt voicing Matthew, Dream’s raven. Niamh Walsh and Joely Richardson will alternate in portraying Ethel Cripps, while Kyo Ra is Rose Walker. You can check out a closer look at all the additional cast in the gallery below.

Neil Gaiman describes the thinking behind the casting in a new blog post for Netflix. Here’s a sample:

“Hundreds of talented women from all around the planet auditioned, and they were brilliant, and none of them were right. Someone who could speak the truth to Dream, on the one hand, but also be the person you’d want to meet when your life was done on the other. And then we saw Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s (she/her) audition and we knew we had our Death.”

Netflix still hasn’t announced a final release date for The Sandman.
