Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and More React To Their Emmy Nominations

Award shows have infamously refused to recognize sci-fi or superhero films and TV shows. But this morning, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences bestowed Emmy nods on some of the genres’ most standout programs. All of these shows will face some stiff competition when the annual ceremony airs in September. Regardless, the significance of their nominations isn’t lost on any of their performers or creators. Check out a few reactions below.

Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ live-action series, WandaVision scored a nomination for Oustanding Limited Series. And its leading lady, Elizabeth Olsen, also received a nod for her performance as a tortured Wanda Maximoff. Olsen shared her thoughts on her nomination during a recent chat with Variety:

“I’m just really proud of us!” said Olsen. “It was a crazy show, and I’m sure everyone feels that way at the end of every job. We had a great time together making our show, and for it to even have had the response that it had was enough, and then to be recognized on this level is very surprising and exciting.”

As most fans know by now, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was Marvel’s original choice to usher in the studio’s foray into TV on Disney+. However, the pandemic prompted a shift in their release schedule. But according to Olsen, WandaVision was the right series to kick off Marvel’s small-screen slate.

“For Marvel to enter television by creating a love song to television just felt perfect,” continued Olsen. “It was so challenging but such a joy, it was really one of the most fun jobs I’ve ever had because of these sitcoms through the decades. It made me realize, ‘Oh maybe I should be a sitcom actor, what am I doing with all these dramas?’”

Olsen’s co-stars Paul Bettany and Kathryn Hahn, who received nods for Outstanding Lead Actor and Supporting Actress, respectively, also chimed in with their own remarks.

“What fantastic news to wake up to this morning!” said Bettany. “I’m deeply honored to have been nominated for what was a dream role for me, and I’m thrilled for all of my WandaVision family for the love they received from the Academy. And then to see Uncle Frank get recognized as well makes this the happiest of mornings.”

“I could not be more proud to be a part of this show and to come out of the gate with WandaVision with this kind of storytelling and bold move to represent this space,” echoed Hahn. “When I first was pitched WandaVision, being a newbie to the Marvel world to be totally honest, I was so excited by the ambition and by the scale, but also the fact that they were trying to tell a love story — but a woman’s story in which her origin of her power is really her own strength. It wasn’t that she was bitten by, no offense, a spider or was blasted by somebody from the outside. It’s very exciting to be a part of that, and that it was a group of women writers. When I heard that I was the witch, that sealed the deal. There was no going back.”

Meanwhile, Amazon’s The Boys received several nominations as well, including one for Outstanding Drama series. Showrunner Eric Kripke reflected on the announcement in a new interview with The Wrap. Some of the show’s stars also shared their reactions on social media.

“Every beat is a beat you’ve heard in these articles a million times,” said Kripke. “Like, ‘Oh my God! I wasn’t expecting it. And I was just doing work. Then my phone blew up. And I’m just so grateful and stunned! And it still hasn’t sunk in.’ Like, literally every f***king thing out of my mouth is the worst possible cliché about what this experience is, which I’m a little embarrassed about. But that’s just the truth of what I’m going through.”

The Mandalorian was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row, which was met with enthusiasm by Pedro Pascal. Unfortunately, neither Anthony Mackie nor Sebastian Stan were nominated for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Instead, Don Cheadle got recognized for his 95-second appearance in the premiere episode. And he’s just as surprised as anyone else. Check out his and Pascal’s reactions below.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on CBS on September 19.
