Neil Gaiman Confirms the End of Filming on The Sandman’s First Season

Netflix can officially take credit for getting a Sandman adaptation off the ground. While answering questions on his official Tumblr page earlier this week, Neil Gaiman casually mentioned that the streamer has “finished principal photography” on the first season of the highly-anticipated series based on his acclaimed graphic novels.

With filming out of the way, the show is currently in the throes of post-production. According to Gaiman, this means fans must now sit back and wait while the series’ movers and shakers render the visual effects, compose the score, and accomplish a variety of other behind-the-scenes tasks. Gaiman couldn’t offer any specifics as to when we might actually see some footage. However, he seems to believe that the show stays true to the spirit of the comics that inspired it. He also singled out the work of Tom Sturridge, who leads The Sandman’s cast as Dream/Morpheus.

“It feels like Sandman,” added Gaiman. “I don’t know if that means that people who watch TV will like it – although I hope they will – but I suspect that if you like Sandman and you want to see it on the screen, then you’ll like this. (I also think Tom Sturridge will be a star after season one of Sandman drops.)”

A Sandman adaptation had been stuck in development hell since the mid-’90s, when the original comic was still riding its initial wave of success. The original plan was to produce a movie version. But after various filmmakers came and went, Warner Bros. began to consider adapting the property for TV. Netflix secured the rights in 2019, and once the full cast was assembled, filming kicked off last October.

Aside from Sturridge, The Sandman’s cast also includes Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer), Boyd Holbrook (the Corinthian), Charles Dance (Roderick Burgess), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Death), David Thewlis (Doctor Destiny), and Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine). Additionally, Patton Oswalt has a role as the voice of Matthew the Raven. Allan Heinberg developed the series and is executive producing alongside Gaiman and David S. Goyer.

Netflix still hasn’t announced a premiere date for The Sandman.
