The Wheel of Time Showrunner Teases a Multiple-Perspective Adventure

Later this year, a new fantasy series will attempt to make its way into fans’ hearts as The Wheel of Time debuts on Amazon Prime. It’s no secret that Amazon Studios are investing big time into fantasy series. Besides adapting Robert Jordan’s epic saga, they are developing a The Lord of the Rings TV series. The world is looking for its next big fantasy series after Game of Thrones, and producers hope The Wheel of Time might be the right one. (It can be argued that the source inspired George R.R. Martin, including its constant change of POV).

Wheel of Time is the first fantasy series that really dove into the political and cultural worlds of all these different characters,” showrunner Rafe Judkins said while talking with EW. “It was also one of the first to dive into multiple POV characters, so you’re following an ensemble, with each of them having their own agendas and approaches to everything. That’s always felt to me like the missing piece of the fantasy-literature landscape that hasn’t been brought to TV or film yet.”

Briefly, the story follows Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine, a member of the mystic order known as the Aes Sedai. She is a channeler of the One Power, a mystical power capable of manipulating the universe. Once upon a time, both men and women could master it. However, some dark magic prevented most men from accessing it, leaving it a women’s prerogative. In the story, the men who can use it (like Álvaro Morte’s Logain) are hunted down by the Aes Sedai.

“Just as men are often trying to shut down female power in our world, the Aes Sedai are trying to stop this man from becoming too powerful,” Judkins added. “If, hypothetically, one of our male characters were able to use the One Power, they understand the stakes of it from what they see of Logain.”

Amazon will debut the first season of The Wheel of Time somewhere in November.
