In addition to returning Star Wars vets like Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ will also bring several new characters into the mix, one of whom will be played by Sung Kang. Kang is perhaps best known from his role as Han in the Fast & Furious franchise. And Kang can now add lightsaber dueling to his list of onscreen skills.
Kang teased his Obi-Wan Kenobi role during a recent interview with Screen Rant. Kang grew up idolizing Star Wars. So naturally, joining the franchise has been a surreal experience. He also hinted that he might get to share a scene or two with Christensen’s Darth Vader.
“I used to dress in the cheap Kmart plastic Halloween costumes — [of] Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader — almost every single day from eight to thirteen years old,” said Kang. “My friends and I would play pretend. We’d make our own lightsabers out of, you know, toilet paper centers and stuff like that…To be able to be on set and see Darth Vader and see the Star Wars universe in front of me…just as a fan, to be able to be a part of that history is pretty amazing. I kept pinching myself going, ‘How did I end up here?’ And my character has a lightsaber, [and] it’s not a toy, it’s actually the real thing.”

Lucasfilm previously confirmed that Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 10 years after the Great Jedi Purge. Unfortunately, it’s not clear if Kang’s character will be a member of the Jedi Order who survived Order 66. He could also be some random cosmic vagabond who found a lightsaber after the fall of the Republic and now uses it without any proper Force training. Or maybe he’s an Inquisitor working for the Empire.
Kang was formally announced as part of Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi cast earlier this year. He joins other Star Wars newcomers including Kumail Nanjiani, Moses Ingram, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Benny Safdie. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will also reprise their roles from the prequels as Owen and Beru Lars, respectively. Production is currently underway using the same StageCraft technology made popular by The Mandalorian.
Disney+ hasn’t set a release date for Obi-Wan Kenobi. But a 2022 release seems likely.
