Two decades ago, composer Howard Shore’s epic music helped director Peter Jackson bring The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. Additionally, Shore won three Oscars for his work on the trilogy. He also returned to score Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy as well. Now, Shore may soon return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Deadline is reporting that Shore is in talks to compose the music for Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series. Presumably that would allow the show’s music to be consistent with the films. Shore’s score for the first trilogy is already considered to be iconic. Potentially, his work on the show will expand his Tolkien legacy even further.
Shore was the original music director for Saturday Night Live, and he also composed the show’s original theme. His feature film credits include The Fly, The Silence of the Lambs, The Departed, Hugo, and Philadelphia.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are the showrunners of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings, which takes place thousands of years before the trilogy. It’s set during Middle-Earth’s Second Age, as an ancient evil returns after a long period of peace. The show stars Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Charles Edwards.
Production of the first season was recently wrapped up in New Zealand. The upcoming second season is also in development, and pre-production will begin in the United Kingdom in 2022.
The Lord of the Rings will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
