What If…? Creators Tease a Jam-Packed Finale, New Characters in Season 2

The penultimate episode of Marvel’s What If…? teased that an epic interdimensional showdown is in store for tomorrow’s season finale. And it sounds like the creators are pulling out all the stops for what could be the multiverse’s last stand. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, head writer A.C. Bradley teased what viewers can expect from the home stretch. Plus, she even dropped a few hints about season 2.

Last week’s episode already confirmed that even though he caused his own universe’s destruction in episode 4, Strange Supreme will join the Watcher’s impending battle against Ultron. And earlier today, a new clip revealed that Party Thor will have a role to play in the skirmish as well. But they aren’t the only ones. According to Bradley, the finale will feature a who’s who of the season’s fan-favorites.

“We will pop into and re-meet some of our heroes from the previous episodes, including the lovely Captain Carter [Hayley Atwell], Strange Supreme, Party Thor [Chris Hemsworth], and even Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan],” said Bradley. “Early on in the first season, like day one talking about it, there was this notion of we’re creating all these great heroes, but we only get to sit with them for 20 or 30 minutes. Wouldn’t it be great to see them again in the finale? And then once that decision was made, it liberated me to make the endings a little bit darker and bigger, knowing that we can give some sort of resolution in the finale.”

Bradley also discussed which new Phase Four heroes could be making their series debuts when What If…? returns next year. Additionally, she hinted that the next batch of episodes will feature less world-ending calamity and more character-focused storytelling.

“Going into the second season, we’re sticking with anthology form,” added Bradley. “And it’s going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season. Hopefully, we’ll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If…? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we’ve got to share the love. I’m very excited to show new worlds, new heroes.”

The season finale of What If…? hits Disney+ tonight at midnight.
