Stargate SG-1 Co-Creator Reveals His Ideas For a New Series

TV revivals are all the rage, so now seems as good a time as any to resurrect the Stargate brand, especially with other throwback sci-fi properties like Star Wars and Star Trek blowing up on the small screen. There hasn’t been a proper Stargate series on TV since Stargate Universe closed out its two-season run in 2011. And while development on a potential revival was complicated by Amazon’s acquisition of MGM this year, Stargate SG-1 co-creater Brad Wright hasn’t given up on the franchise yet.

Speaking with SYFY Wire, Wright discussed his goals for one possible revival, which would see the return of several fan-favorites. If Wright gets his wish, the new show will count Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O’Neill), Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter, now promoted to general), and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) among its cast members. However, it would also leave room for some new faces as well.

“My goal was to create something that was new that also honored the existing universe, that lived in the canon of SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, and therefore included some of those characters.” said Wright. “Bring in a new guard? Absolutely. But not at the expense of the pre-existing characters, who I think would still be very much on their game and still firing on all cylinders.”

Wright also seemed to rule out the idea of revisiting old SG-1 storylines. Instead, he believes it’s better to push the characters in new directions.

“I don’t think that’s as important as something new that lives in the same universe,” added Wright. “Because there’s so much mythology that we covered but there’s so many stories yet to be told and so many new places yet to be visited. And I think it would be fun to do that.”

Additionally, Wright shared a fascinating bit of insight into how his current script differs from all other Stargate offshoots:

“I think the trick to anything would be that it’s high time the world found out about the Stargate program, for better or for worse,” noted Wright. “Keeping all of that technology from the world at a time when we could really use it, at a time when climate change is a genuine threat, at a time when there was a pandemic that we sure could have used a fix for, for example. The world needs to find out. The secret needs to get out especially since we have come so far and will have come so far after another 11 or 12 years.”
