X-Men: The Animated Series Revival Is Officially Coming To Disney+

Over two years ago, the creative team behind the landmark X-Men: The Animated Series revealed that they were putting together a pitch for Disney+ to revive the show. Now, it’s official. The Wrap is reporting that a new series, tentatively titled X-Men ’97, will pick up where TAS left off.

Eric and Julia Lewald, and director Larry Houston will consult on the new series. Houston and the Lewalds were behind the pitch to revive the show. However, the key creative team for the new series includes head writer Beau DeMayo, supervising director Jake Castorena, and supervising producer Charley Feldman.

Additionally, several cast members are slated to return for the new show. That includes Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, and Alyson Court. But the report also notes that “some will reprise their original roles and others will step into entirely new roles.”

New cast members for the series include Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.

X-Men: The Animated Series debuted on Fox in 1992, and helped pave the way for the first live-action X-Men movie. It ran for five seasons before it came to an end. In the final episode, the X-Men and their recurring adversary/ally, Magneto, had to say goodbye to Professor Charles Xavier. The alien Shi’ar had to take Xavier into space for treatment after he was nearly killed by an assassin. If X-Men ’97 really is picking up where TAS left off, then that’s the current status quo for the show.

X-Men ’97 will likely hit Disney+ in 2023.
