Ming-Na Wen Explains Fennec Shand’s Relationship With Boba Fett

Boba Fett usually works alone, but as we saw in The Mandalorian season 2, he seems to be forging a new path for himself on Disney+. After assuming control of Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire in a post-credits scene, the bounty hunter’s story will continue later this month in The Book of Boba Fett, which once again features Ming-Na Wen as his new lieutenant, Fennec Shand. It’s clear from the marketing campaign that the spinoff intends to show Boba in a brand new light. Regardless, Wen promises that the series will retain everything fans love about the character, even with Fennec tagging along for the ride.

Wen clarified Fennec’s relationship with Boba in the winter 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 magazine (via Heroic Hollywood). Viewers will recall that Fennec was left for dead on Tatooine until Boba rescued her in The Mandalorian’s first season. Naturally, Boba knows something about surviving death (although we still don’t know how he managed to escape the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi…). And this provides the foundation for their partnership in the new series.

“Well, there’s a partnership between the two of them [Fennec and Boba Fett], for sure,” said Wen. “They’re bonded by the fact that they both lived through a near-death experience. And there is a sense of code that they both abide by.”

Some fans may have watched Boba team up with Din Djarin last year and come to the conclusion that his own near-death experience led him to turn over a new leaf. But as Wen explains, his brief alliance with Team Mando doesn’t necessarily make him (or Fennec) a hero.

“It’s going to be really interesting to see how their dynamics grow in The Book of Boba Fett,” added Wen. “I think that’s all I can say. The rest is, you have to watch. Not that they’re the bad guys. They’re not that good either. We are the anti-hero. I like playing an anti-hero. You get away with more, I think.”

The Book of Boba Fett will premiere on Disney+ on December 29.
