Matt Reeves Describes Gotham PD Show Storyline He’s No Longer Doing

In one way or another, it looks like HBO Max‘s Gotham PD series spun off from The Batman won’t happen, as such. Though the movie debuted with a strong $134 million, the creative forces behind it aren’t all agreed how the spinoffs should go. The concept of a Batman prequel series focusing on the police already sounded awfully similar to Fox’s Gotham, but director Matt Reeves had a slightly different take. One he says he’s now “not doing.”

As reported by EW, Reeves told the Happy Sad Confused podcast, “that one actually is put on hold. We’re not really doing that.” He did, however, take a moment to describe what his version of the show would have been:

“It was going to be year one because the movie is year two, and I wanted it to be the first appearance. But it wasn’t going to be a Batman story. It was going about about this corrupt cop, and it was going to be about how the worst gang in Gotham were the GCPD. And [Bruce] would have touched paths with Gordon. It would have been someone to measure him against, but it would be a battle for his soul.”

Again, it sounds a lot like Fox’s Gotham. But per Slashfilm, Reeves gave an interview over the weekend that indicated the former GCPD show idea might now focus on Arkham Asylum. On the Cyber Nerds YouTube show, he said the spinoff might be “actually now moving more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie, and some of the characters, again in their origins that you would – almost leaning into the idea of – it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.”

So while the cop-centric spinoff may not happen, another could take its place. By being a prequel to the movie, it could avoid anything we might have seen in there. And there’s still the Penguin origin show in the works. HBO Max wants its share of the Bat-bucks.

If we’re going to get The Batman TV spinoffs anyway, what would you like to see? Let us know in comments.
