The Umbrella Academy Confirms Vanya’s Trans Identity in Season 3

In less than three months, The Umbrella Academy will finally pick up where season 2’s massive cliffhanger left off. But ahead of the show’s return this summer, Netflix has announced a major change to one of its headliners. In order to reflect his gender identity, Elliot Page confirmed that his character, Vanya Hargreeves, is also coming out as transgender and will now go by Viktor. You can check out a photo of Page in the new season below.

Although Page came out as trans in 2020, his transition wasn’t previously expected to be written into The Umbrella Academy’s new season. In fact, Variety initially reported that Page would continue playing Vanya as a cisgender woman. And when Netflix released a new promo earlier this month confirming season 3’s June premiere, Vanya looked the same as she did in the season 2 finale. Regardless, the show’s producers must have changed their minds about how to handle Page’s character moving forward.

It’s still not clear how the show plans to address Viktor’s transition. But it seems likely that Page himself gave some input on how his story should unfold. Aside from this, fans can also look forward to the introduction of several new characters on The Umbrella Academy this year, specifically the members of the alt-reality Sparrow Academy led by Justin H. Min’s Ben Hargreeves.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 will premiere on Netflix on June 22.
