Both It and It: Chapter Two were big hits for Warner Bros. when they arrived in theaters in 2017 and 2019. But although they managed to fit most of Stephen King’s 1,200-page opus into two feature-length movies, that’s not stopping the studio from considering the franchise’s spinoff potential. Via The Ankler (and confirmed by Variety), WB is developing a new It prequel series for HBO Max.
Tentatively called Welcome To Derry, the series will wind the clock back to the 1960s and explore the origins of It’s titular entity, which usually takes the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The spinoff will also dive into curse that has plagued the town of Derry, Maine for ages, with fresh victims chosen every 27 years.

It director Andy Muschietti is executive producing Welcome To Derry with his sister, Barbara, through their Double Dream banner. Variety also confirms that Warner Bros. has also opened a writers room for the series, which will be led by Jason Fuchs, who previously did some uncredited rewrite work on Chapter Two. Fuchs also wrote 2015’s Pan and contributed to the script for Wonder Woman in 2017.
Bill Skarsgård memorably brought Pennywise to life in both It films. However, the report doesn’t mention if Warner Bros. wants him to reprise his role for the series. Previously, Tim Curry put his own spin on the dancing clown in ABC’s TV adaptation of It in 1990.
