Danielle Deadwyler Cast as the Lead in J.J. Abrams’ Demimonde

J.J. Abrams long-in-the-works Demimonde TV series has finally cast its lead character. And based on the show’s description, it sounds like Abrams is putting his own spin on the increasingly-popular multiverse concept. Deadline reports that Danielle Deadwyler will headline the series as a woman in search of her missing family.

Demimonde landed a straight-to-series order from HBO in early 2018. But presumably, Abrams got side-tracked when he began work on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Deadwyler is playing Olive Reed, a woman whose husband and daughter suddenly vanish after a “brutal scientific accident” transports them to a “dark, distant other world.” Following their disappearance, Olive must untangle a vast conspiracy in order to reunite with her loved ones.

Abrams previously shopped the series around as a spec script, marking the first time he has actually written a TV project since Fringe. Aside from HBO, Apple TV+ also expressed a strong interest in the series. But because of Abrams’ pre-existing relationship with HBO thanks to Westworld and Lovecraft Country, the premium cable channel won out in the end. Abrams also signed a five-year overall deal with HBO’s parent company, WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery), in 2019.

Deadwyler is coming off a recurring role on HBO Max’s Station Eleven limited series. She also recently appeared in Netflix’ The Harder They Fall. Her upcoming slate currently includes MGM’s Till and the Netflix miniseries From Scratch.

Showrunning duties for Demimonde will fall to Kira Snyder, Rand Ravich, and Far Shariat. All three will executive produce the series alongside Abrams and Ben Stephenson. Additionally, Rachel Rusch Rich will serve as a co-executive producer. No release date is set, but the series is reportedly in the early pre-production stage.
