Just one year after she debuted as the next Scarlet Knight, Ryan Wilder is officially hanging up her cape and cowl. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that The CW has cancelled Batwoman after three seasons on the network.
The now-final episode of the series aired last month and featured a cliffhanger ending that teased the arrival of a monstrous character from DC’s comic book universe. Unfortunately, the identity of the creature remains a mystery for now. Showrunner Caroline Dries also confirmed the show’s cancellation on Twitter earlier today. You can check out what she had to say below.
Just got the sad news that #Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes. So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers, cast and crew. Thank you, fans! We love you.

Batwoman premiered on The CW in 2019. Ruby Rose originally headlined the series as Kate Kane, who previously made her first appearance in the network’s Elseworlds crossover event a year earlier. Rose made history as the first openly gay superhero to appear on TV. But only two days after its first season ended, Rose announced her departure from the show. The producers subsequently cast Javicia Leslie as Ryan, who succeeded Kate as Gotham City’s new Batwoman.
News of the show’s cancellation comes amid reports that Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global are thinking about selling The CW. Apparently, Nexstar (America’s largest TV station owner) is interested in buying the network. But for now, The CW is still developing other DC shows, including Gotham Knights.
Batwoman was dogged by controversy last fall after Rose accused some of her former co-stars and producers of inappropriate conduct, which she claimed was the reason she left the series. However, this prompted members of the cast and crew to issue their own statements, all of which claimed that Rose was actually fired from the show after several complaints arose regarding her own behavior. In any case, Rose hasn’t publicly addressed the issue in months.
