Doctor Who Casts Ncuti Gatwa As the New Doctor

The only thing constant on Doctor Who is change. And with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor on her way out after one final special, it’s time for a new Doctor to enter the TARDIS. BBC has announced that Doctor Who has cast Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor. He will also become the first Black actor to lead the show, but not the first actor of African descent to play the Doctor. Jo Martin previously played a Fugitive Doctor during Whittaker’s seasons on the show.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” said Gatwa in a statement. “A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavor my upmost to do the same.”

Appropriately enough, the Fourteenth Doctor will take over the leading role in the fourteenth season of the revival series. Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies is once again in charge of the franchise, and Gatwa expressed his excitement about working with him.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true,” noted Gatwa. “His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

Gatwa’s best known role is Eric Effiong on Netflix’s Sex Education. He has also appeared in Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten RomansThe Last Letter from Your Lover, and Stonemouth. Gatwa has also been cast in Margot Robbie’s live-action Barbie movie.

Doctor Who season 14 will premiere in 2023, just in time for the 60th anniversary of the show. However, Gatwa will make his first appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor in Whittaker’s final Doctor Who special this fall.
