Stranger Things 4 Will Have Two Feature-Length Episodes

The new season of Stranger Things is almost upon us. But before Netflix takes us back to the Upside Down, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have revealed a key bit of info about two of the upcoming episodes. While speaking with The Wrap, the Duffers confirmed that episodes 7 and 9 are feature-length, with the season finale stretching over two hours long.

Previously, the Duffers confirmed that all Stranger Things 4 episodes will run more than an hour each, which already makes it longer than prior seasons. Earlier episodes usually ran between 45 minutes to an hour. But the next season finale will officially cement its place as Stranger Things’ longest episode when it hits Netflix next month. That record is currently held by Stranger Things 3’s finale, “The Battle of Starcourt,” with a runtime of one hour and 17 minutes.

Stranger Things still has one more season to go before ending its run for good. But Matt Duffer explained that season 4 is loaded with tons of new reveals that set the stage for its last year, hence the longer episodes.

“A lot of it had to do with the fact that we had characters spread out in three locations and we had a lot more plot,” said Matt. “It must be quadruple the plot we had in Season 3. That was our fun blockbuster season. This season we knew that Season 5 was going to be our last, we had to start revealing a lot.”

“The more we were writing, the more we realized we need more time in order for these reveals to land, in order for these storylines to work,” continued Matt. “Partway through we knew we needed to ask Netflix for nine episodes instead of eight and as we started shooting we realized, Oh these are mega-long episodes.”

Stranger Things 4 will premiere its first volume of episodes on Netflix next Friday, May 27. Volume 2 will arrive on July 1.
