WandaVision’s Matt Shakman Will Direct Apple TV+’s MonsterVerse Series

It’s been several months since Legendary divulged plans to bring its MonsterVerse franchise to the small screen with a new spinoff on Apple TV+. Now, we finally know who will be sitting in the director’s chair. The studio just confirmed that Matt Shakman has signed on to helm the first two episodes of the upcoming series. You can check out the announcement below.

Legendary announced the spinoff back in January. According to the show’s logline, the story will focus on a family with ties to Monarch, the secret organization that monitors Titan activity all over the world. The series will take place after the original Godzilla, but before the events of its 2019 sequel, King of the Monsters. Showrunner Chris Black created the spinoff with comic book writer Matt Fraction. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will also executive produce via Safehouse Pictures alongside Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita.

Although Shakman has 20 years of directing experience under his belt, helming all nine episodes of Disney+’s WandaVision caused his profile to skyrocket. His work on Marvel’s first live-action series was critically acclaimed and earned him two nominations at last year’s Emmy Awards. The show’s success also convinced Paramount+ to let him direct the next Star Trek sequel. In recent years, Shakman has also helmed episodes of Game of Thrones, Succession, The Boys, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He received his first Emmy nomination in 2020 for directing an episode of Hulu’s The Great.

In the meantime, Legendary is currently developing the MonsterVerse’s next big screen entry as well. The follow-up to Godzilla vs. Kong will begin production in Australia later this year, with Adam Wingard returning to direct the sequel. Last week, former Legion star Dan Stevens booked a leading role in the new film.

Apple TV+ hasn’t announced a premiere date or an official title for Legendary’s MonsterVerse series.
