Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV Series Adds Its First Cast Members

Earlier today, there was a major update concerning Legendary’s follow-up to Godzilla vs. Kong. But it turns out the studio has even more to share about the future of the MonsterVerse. A few months after announcing that a Godzilla spinoff was in the works at Apple TV+, the new series (via The Wrap) has finally landed its first cast members. Anna Sawai (pictured above), Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Trippett, and Elisa Lasowski have all booked roles on the show.

The as-yet-untitled series will pick up in the wake of 2014’s Godzilla, shortly after the final battle between the giant lizard and his MUTO adversaries left San Francisco in ruins. As the world comes to terms with the reality that monsters live among us, one family will discover a legacy that somehow ties them to Monarch, the secret organization that monitors Titan activity across the globe.

According to her character description, Sawai (Pachinko) is playing Cate, a former schoolteacher and a survivor of what is now being called G-Day. In the wake of Godzilla’s emergence, Cate travels to Japan to settle family affairs. But when Cate uncovers a family secret, she decides to dig deeper and find answers. Meanwhile, Watabe (461 Days of Bento) will play Kentaro, an “intelligent, creative and curious young man who has yet to find his own path.” Kentaro’s family harbors its own secrets thanks to his “revered, yet mysterious” father, and his quest to learn more leads him to “discover his own talents.”

Clemons (Zack Snyder’s Justice League) has also been cast as an American ex-pat named May. Her character has “a roguish exterior that she uses to protect herself as well as others.” She also manages to be “three steps ahead of everyone around her,” which comes in handy when deciphering codes or finding loopholes. Additionally, fans can expect to see Trippett (Mare of Easttown) as Tim, an “office drone” who seeks more adventure in his life. Although Joe’s overconfidence sometimes gets him in trouble, his heart is always in the right place.

Finally, Lasowski (Versailles) will appear as the “expert operative,” Duvall. Armed with strong confidence in her skillset and a “wry sense of humor,” it sounds like Duvall will see a lot of action when the series debuts. She will also be guiding a “less field-oriented colleague,” which might be referring to Trippett’s character.

Matt Fraction co-created the series with Chris Black, who also serves as the primary showrunner. The pair will executive produce alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell as well as Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) will executive produce and also direct the first two episodes.

Legendary hasn’t announced a premiere date for its MonsterVerse series.
