Star Wars: Fast X Director Pitched a ‘Lone Wolf and Cub’ Series Before The Mandalorian Debuted

Fast X’s Louis Leterrier pitched a Star Wars television series revolving around a “lone wolf and cub” before The Mandalorian ever debuted.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Leterrier revealed that, years ago, he once pitched a Star Wars television series that had a very similar concept to Disney+’s The Mandalorian.

Leterrier said, “I had [a dream Star Wars project] a long time ago when I came to them and pitched, ‘We should do a Star Wars TV show conceived as a lone wolf and cub.’ They said, ‘We don’t know if it’s a great idea. We’ll get back to you with this idea.’”

While he hasn’t yet directed anything related to Star Wars, Leterrier went on to say he was previously interested in exploring events prior to 1977’s A New Hope and, potentially, a Boba Fett movie.

Leterrier additionally said that 2023’s Fast X has a couple of Star Wars sound effects hidden in the final cut of the film. “We’re all trying, in a way, to make a Star Wars movie,” he explained. “Even in my last movie, Fast X, I put TIE fighter sounds in it. Just cannot help myself.”

The Mandalorian utilizes Leterrier’s ‘lone wolf and cub’ concept

Created by Jon Favreau, the first season of The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in November 2019. The series stars Pedro Pascal as the titular character (or a “lone wolf”) who goes on the run while trying to protect Grogu/Baby Yoda (a “cub”) from various Imperial enemies; namely Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon.

A second season of The Mandalorian followed in October 2020 before The Mandalorian Season 3 then debuted in March 2023. A fourth season is currently in development but does not have an official release date from Lucasfilm at this time.

The first three seasons of The Mandalorian are currently streaming on Disney+.
