Percy Jackson Producer Discusses Possibility of Kane Chronicles Spin-Off

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been a major success, earning praise from fans and critics as well as record ratings for Disney Plus. This has prompted speculation regarding a Kane Chronicles spin-off based on another series of Rick Riordan books in the same setting. This speculation has increased following Netflix recently releasing the series rights.

Percy Jackson producer Rebecca Riordan recently weighed in on the possibility of Disney adapting the Kane Chronicles. Her comments came in response to a Prophecy Radio Podcast poll regarding a crossover between the two franchises. Riordan pointed out that it would be easier for such a crossover to take place if Disney had the rights to both Percy Jackson and Kane Chronicles.

Rebecca Riordan further clarified the situation in a follow-up post. She confirmed that she and her husband once again control the film and series rights to Kane Chronicles. Since Netflix did not produce a movie or show, this leaves the Riordan’s free to sell the rights to another studio. She allowed that they would most likely approach Disney, given their success there so far. However, the Riordan’s are currently focused on the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and not pursuing a Kane Chronicles spin-off at this time.

The Kane Chronicles Explained

The Kane Chronicles are set in the same world as the Percy Jackson books. However, they are based around Egyptian mythology rather than Ancient Greek and Roman myth. The series centers around two siblings, Carter and Sadie Kane, who learn of their family’s legacy as powerful magicians.

The two are recruited into a group of rebel mages who act as hosts for the Egyptian gods. This enhances their powers but brings them into contention with the magical orthodoxy, who forbid such bonds. However, these bonds are necessary, for the gods and mages must work together to thwart the machinations of the chaos god Apophis.

There have been three Kane Chronicles novels, plus a trio of short stories teaming the Kane siblings with Percy Jackson. This wealth of material could easily form the basis of a spin-off series. However, it should be noted again that no spin-off is in the works yet, though it seems a likely prospect for a future Disney Plus series.
