Walton Goggins isn’t sure if he’d want to play Cecil in a live-action Invincible movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Goggins was asked if he’d be interested in playing Cecil Stedman, who he voices in Amazon Prime Video’s animated Invincible series, in a live-action film.
“I don’t know — I think I’ve already played an old man,” Goggins answered. “I don’t think I could do that again.”
What’s happening with the live-action Invincible movie?
A live-action Invincible movie was initially announced in 2017, though it has been hit with a number of delays since then. Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible series temporarily put plans for the live-action movie on hiatus, though plans for the film still remain in motion.
Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman told Variety in October 2023, “I think once we get the script to where it needs to be, I think we’ll be in a good place, and can move fairly quickly after that. But all of the factors that I just discussed are things that we’re thinking about: How does this feel new? How does this feel different? How is this going to feel like something that’s special? Those are very tall orders. We also need to find a way to play off the animated series, but also differentiate ourselves and give the movie a reason for existing. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. But we’re hopeful.”
Seth Rogen also told ComicBook.com in March 2023 that the animated series would influence the movie. “[Invincible] was something not a lot of people, in general, had heard of before the animated series. There was a live-action ‘take’ that was different from the animated ‘take,’ as it were. And then the animated show came out that was very faithful to the comic and was incredibly popular. At that point, it seemed like maybe doing a live-action take that was good but very different would be weird, and maybe not acknowledging the things that people liked about the animated version. Then in our heads, the live-action ‘take’ seemed more like it should feel like a live-action adaptation of the cartoon. Which is a direct adaptation of the comic.”
A live-action Invincible movie does not have a release date at this time. The final episode of Invincible Season 2, meanwhile, releases on Prime Video on April 4, 2024.
