Spawn Might Be Coming to Mortal Kombat 11

Todd McFarlane recently participated in a Reddit AMA to hype Venom’s impending release on home media. Fans had plenty of questions about Sony’s surprise hit, but McFarlane also fielded queries about his other famous creation, Spawn. When asked by one user if Spawn would appear in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11, McFarlane cryptically replied, “I believe he’s on his way…”

Mortal Kombat 11 will be released on April 23, 2019 on all current-gen consoles. During The Game Awards earlier this month, the announcement trailer featured Dark Raiden fighting two different incarnations of Scorpion. As expected, there was blood and dismemberment aplenty. If Spawn were to join these characters, it wouldn’t be his first time making an appearance in a fighting game. The demonic antihero previously guest starred in the Xbox version of 2003’s Soulcalibur II. That game also featured Necrid, another character of McFarlane’s own creation.

Beyond this, the AMA gave fans the opportunity to ask about the Spawn film reboot, which McFarlane is writing and directing. McFarlane revealed that he plans to cameo in the movie and that it won’t feature an origin story because “It eats away time to do cool stuff.” He also acknowledged the film’s slow development process (“Hollywood is a funny little town”) and said that it will be influenced by “a lot of supernatural thrillers and good dramas.” So far, only Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner have been cast as Spawn and Twitch Williams, respectively. The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero will be designing the character’s suit.
