The Toxic Crusaders Return In a New Video Game

If you’ve never heard of the Toxic Crusaders, it’s probably because the animated series only lasted a single season in 1991. It was a very loose adaptation of Troma’s The Toxic Avenger, and a very kid-friendly animated show in the vein of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While the team was never close to the popularity of the TMNT, the Toxic Crusaders are set to return in an all-new video game.

Retrowave is behind the new game, which looks like it was inspired by the success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. In other words, it’s a four-player beat ’em up game. Within the announcement video below, the playable characters include Toxie, his girlfriend, Yvonne, No-Zone, Junkyard, and Major Disaster. Headbanger and Toxie’s mom, Mrs. Junko, will also be playable characters.

There are a lot of callbacks to the animated series in the video, and Yvonne’s soprano singing and accordion act has even been turned into a useful power for the game.

The game will be set in Tromaville, with an assortment of bizarre enemies including mutants, zombie chickens, and Radiation Rangers. There will also be cameos from characters who appeared in Troma films like Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., Class of Nuke ‘Em High, and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.

Toxic Crusaders will be released on PC later this year, but it is unknown if it will be ported to consoles. Attendees at PAX East, will be able to test out a playable version of the game at Retrowave’s booth from March 23 to March 26.
