Avengers: Endgame Passes Avatar for #2 All-Time Domestic Box Office

In less than a month, Avengers: Endgame has torn up several box office records around the world. This weekend, Marvel Studios’ blockbuster film took in approximately $29.4 million, which brings its domestic total to $770 million. That means Endgame has now passed James Cameron’s Avatar for second place at the all-time domestic box office.

During its initial release in 2009, Avatar set a new domestic record by pulling in $749.7 million. A re-release in summer 2010 added an additional $10. 7 million to Avatar‘s record. That record was broken by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned earned $936 million in late 2015 and early 2016. That mark is unlikely to be matched by Endgame, which fell to #2 at the box office this weekend. However, Endgame will still easily pass $800 million domestically.

Internationally, Avatar also set the worldwide record with $2.78 billion. Unlike The Force Awakens, Avatar‘s record there will inevitably fall to Endgame within the near future. Through the weekend, Endgame passed $2.6 billion at the worldwide box office. That means Endgame could claim the crown as early as next weekend. Cameron will likely acknowledge that landmark occasion, just as he recently did when Endgame passed Titanic.

Will Endgame become the first $3 billion film? After Avatar‘s record, that’s the next major milestone for it to reach. But with the arrival of the other summer blockbusters this month, $3 billion is by no means a sure thing.
