It’s no secret that Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t perform as well as Lucafilm hoped it would in 2018. Although Solo received decent reviews from critics, its $393 million worldwide box office haul was considered a disappointment for a Star Wars film. These numbers all but dashed any chances for a sequel. And in a recent tweet, Solo co-screenwriter Jon Kasdan confirmed that we’re not likely to see more of Han Solo’s early adventures play out onscreen anytime soon.
Don’t think anyone’s pursuing a Solo sequel at the moment @KenobiJj I think a feature, at this point, would be a tough sell & the D+ Star Wars slate is really…pretty packed, all shows I’m lookin forward to. My work on Indy is long over but I’m excited there’s forward movement!

Kasdan co-wrote Solo with his father, Lawrence Kasdan, who is best known among Star Wars fans for co-writing the scripts for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, the Kasdans couldn’t propel Solo to financial success. Disney’s Star Wars anthology series got off to a good start with Rogue One in 2016. However, Solo simply wasn’t able to breakthrough in May 2018. The movie, which introduced Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, opened to less than $150 million worldwide. It fared even worse during its second weekend, earning only $29 million domestically.

By the time its theatrical run ended, Solo became the lowest-grossing live-action movie in Star Wars history. Disney subsequently shelved all plans for future anthology films. The filmmakers clearly had ideas for where a sequel could go, as evidenced by the Darth Maul cameo at the end. Regardless, that plotline may never be resolved.
