After facing numerous setbacks during the last five years, cameras are finally rolling on Y: The Last Man. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that FX’s adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s acclaimed comic book series began production in Toronto this week.
Much like Yorick Brown’s voyage in the comic, Y’s path to TV screens hasn’t been an easy one. FX began developing the series in 2015 and later hired Michael Green and Aida Croal as showrunners. The producers began filling out the series’ cast in 2018, with Barry Keoghan headlining as Yorick. Filming initially started that same year. But last summer, Eliza Clark replaced Green and Croal as the series’ only showrunner. The project hit another snag earlier this year when Keoghan left the show as well. A few weeks later, the producers cast Ben Schnetzer as the new Yorick.
Additionally, Schnetzer’s character isn’t the only one getting recast. Deadline has confirmed that Ashley Romans and Olivia Thirlby have joined the series as Agent 355 and Yorick’s sister, Hero Brown, respectively. Those characters were originally set to be played by Lashana Lynch and Imogen Poots. The report also notes that Timothy Hutton is no longer playing the U.S. President in the pilot episode. Instead, Paul Gross will play this role. Fortunately, Diane Lane is remaining with the series as Yorick and Hero’s mother, Jennifer Brown. The supporting cast also includes Amber Tamblyn, Marin Ireland, Diana Bang, Elliot Fletcher and Juliana Canfield.

Vaughan and Guerra published 60 issues of Y: The Last Man between 2002 and 2008. The series traces the fallout of a mysterious “gendercide” that wipes out every living mammal with a Y chromosome with the exception of Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand. In the plague’s aftermath, Yorick sets out on a journey to unlock the secret to his survival and reunite with his girlfriend in Australia.
Clark wrote the first two episodes of the series, which will be directed by Louise Friedberg. Y: The Last Man will premiere on FX on Hulu in 2021.
