Brie Larson Praises Captain Marvel 2 Director Nia DaCosta

Last summer, Marvel Studios recruited up-and-coming director Nia DaCosta to helm Captain Marvel 2, making her the youngest filmmaker (as well as the first black woman) to direct an MCU feature. So far, DaCosta has only made two movies: the critically-acclaimed indie thriller Little Woods and the upcoming Candyman reboot, so it should be interesting to see how she tackles a mainstream superhero film. Fortunately, it sounds like she’s already getting along with the sequel’s star, Brie Larson. While appearing on A Little Late With Lilly Singh, Larson shared her thoughts on DaCosta joining the franchise.

Captain Marvel 2 isn’t expected to start production anytime soon. However, Larson teased some of the early meetings she’s had with DaCosta. During their interview, Singh expressed her own excitement to see a “young black director” filling the sequel’s director’s chair. Larson agreed, and also discussed how she was impressed by DaCosta’s pitch for the movie.

“It’s amazing, and I’m so excited that it’s announced and I can talk about it,” said Larson. “Nia’s amazing, and she got the job because she was the best person for the job. That’s one of my favorite parts about this. She just gave an incredible presentation and I’m inspired by her. She has confidence. It’s a big deal, I think, to step into this thing that we’ve…you know, it’s the Marvel Universe! It’s this huge thing…to have a leader who’s just like, ‘Yeah, I’m meant to be here.’”

Later in their conversation, Larson detailed her thought process behind accepting the role of Carol Danvers and also explained how playing the character has impacted her life over the last few years.

“If it was just, ‘Hey, will you take a look at this script? There’s this character, Carol Danvers. What do you think?,’ it’s an easy yes,” added Larson. “But there’s the stuff that comes with it. Like, you’re talking about the famous part. There’s this other thing that is so unknowable and so hard to wrap your head around and understand, and I’m pretty introverted. So for me, it was many months of thinking about it and understanding, ‘Can I do this? Can I bring that energy into my life and be happy?’ It was a big deal, and I remember exactly where I was when I said, ‘I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do this.’ And I love it. I love playing Captain Marvel. And my life is actually…I know it sounds really annoying, but it is actually very normal. I can do all the things that I did previously.”

Captain Marvel 2 opens on November 11, 2022.
