Two months after Joss Whedon vacated his role as showrunner for HBO’s The Nevers, the network has finally found his replacement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Philippa Goslett has stepped in as the new primary creative force behind the upcoming sci-fi series.
Most recently, Goslett co-wrote Mary Magdalene, which opened in 2018 and starred Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. She also penned How to Talk to Girls at Parties in 2017. Goslett will executive produce The Nevers alongside Bernadette Caulfield, Ilene S. Landress, Doug Petrie and Jane Espenson. Although Whedon is no longer involved with the series, he’s still credited as an executive producer as well.
Before he left the show, The Nevers was going to be Whedon’s triumphant return to TV. However, his reputation took a hit last year after Ray Fisher began accusing him of unprofessional behavior while helming Justice League’s reshoots. Fisher even suggested that Whedon was forcibly removed from The Nevers in the wake of WarnerMedia’s investigation into his conduct, which officially concluded last month. Regardless, Whedon issued a statement claiming that exhaustion was the reason for his exit.

The Nevers takes place in Victorian-era London and centers on a group of women who develop extraordinary abilities. Filming on the show’s 10-episode first season reportedly wrapped last fall. HBO has yet to release a proper trailer for the series. However, fans got to see a few seconds of footage in a recent sizzle reel for the network’s 2021 slate.
HBO still hasn’t announced a premiere date for The Nevers.
